Choosing a machine
Is a backhoe the right machine?
A backhoe wins when the job is split between digging and loading, and the site can't justify sending two machines.
Choose a backhoe when…
One-machine sites
Mixed groundworks, utility repairs, farm and smallholding duty. Loader on the front for muck and aggregate, rear excavator for pipe and drain work — one trailer, one operator.
Choose a mini excavator when…
Digging is the main job
You'll dig more than you load, tail-swing matters, or you need a tilt-rotator. A dedicated excavator will out-dig a backhoe of the same tonnage.
Choose a wheel loader when…
Loading is the main job
You load bulk material all day and only occasionally dig. A wheel loader is faster, gentler on surfaces, and cheaper to run per bucket.
FAQs
Questions UK buyers ask.

When is a backhoe loader a better buy than a mini excavator?+
When the job is genuinely split between digging and loading and the site cannot justify two machines. You get a loader on the front for muck and aggregate and a rear excavator for pipe and drain work, on one trailer with one operator. If you mostly dig, a dedicated excavator out-digs a backhoe of the same weight.
What size backhoe loaders do you supply?+
The compact range runs from the 600 kg class up to the 3-tonne class, aimed at utility crews, smallholdings and mixed groundworks rather than full-size construction duty. Operating weight and dig depth for each model are published on its own page.
Can a compact backhoe be towed between sites?+
The smaller classes are light enough for a braked plant trailer behind a suitable towing vehicle, which is much of their appeal for utility and rural work. Always check the machine's operating weight against your trailer plate and licence entitlement before travelling.
What warranty and parts backup applies?+
Machines come with a 12-month parts warranty, and Ashmoors handles warranty claims, servicing, parts and technical support in the UK for the life of the machine. Send the model and serial number when ordering parts so we confirm the correct fitment.
