Choosing a machine
Which size of excavator?
The dividing line is transport, dig depth and how the machine is going to earn its keep across a season.
R57
5.5T · Mid-size
The versatile end of the range. Roadable behind most beavertails, still comfortable on domestic streets. Drainage, foundations, pool digs, landscape shaping.
R60 · R82 · R90
6–8.2T · Production
Full-day production digging for site crews and plant hire fleets. Deeper reach, higher aux flow, more comfortable cab for long shifts.
R150 · R230
15–21.5T · Civils
Bulk excavation, road building and major groundworks where cycle volume matters more than access.
R320 · R420 · R520
29.6–50.8T · Quarry
Heavy earthmoving, quarrying and mass excavation with large buckets and reinforced chassis.
Confirm transport arrangements, hitch and coupler preference before order — machines above 8T need low-loader delivery.
FAQs
Questions UK buyers ask.
Not seeing yours? Ask our UK team — tell us the job and we will recommend the right machine.
How are excavators above 8 tonnes delivered in the UK?+
Machines over about 8 tonnes travel by low-loader rather than plant trailer, arranged and insured by Ashmoors to your site. We need site access details, a hardstanding or firm offload point, and a contact on site. Delivery is quoted with the machine.
Which excavator size suits bulk earthmoving rather than groundworks?+
For drainage, foundations and domestic groundworks the 5.5-8.2 tonne class is normally right. For road building and bulk excavation the 15-21.5 tonne class moves far more per cycle. Quarrying and mass excavation start at the 29.6-50.8 tonne machines.
Are these excavators ready for a tilt-rotator or hydraulic hitch?+
The mid and larger classes are specified with auxiliary hydraulic provision for hitches, breakers and tilt attachments. Because flow and line configuration differ by model, confirm the attachment you intend to run with us before ordering so we supply the correct hydraulic setup.
What engine and operating weight does each excavator have?+
Every model page publishes the engine make and the operating weight, from the 5.5-tonne R57 through to the 50.8-tonne R520. Most machines use Kubota diesel power; where a different engine is fitted, such as Yanmar or Changchai, it is named in the table.
Do you support UK parts and servicing on the larger machines?+
Yes. Ashmoors is your single UK point of contact for warranty, parts, servicing and technical support on every excavator we supply, including the quarry-class machines. Quote the model and serial number and we confirm availability and delivery before you commit.
