Choosing a machine
Which mini excavator?
Match the class to access, transport and dig depth — not to spec-sheet horsepower.
R06
0.6T · Micro
Fits through a standard side gate. Retractable tracks close to walk-behind width. For back gardens, courtyards and drain repairs where nothing bigger will pass.
R10 · R13
1.0T – 1.3T · Sub-tonne
Trailerable behind a large 4×4 on a 750 kg trailer. Enough dig for domestic groundworks, garden builds and light drainage without a plant licence.
R15 · R18
1.5T – 1.8T · Light groundworks
The workhorse class. Cab-optional, 4-way auxiliary hydraulics, comfortable transport on a 3.5T plant trailer. First-choice for landscapers running full days.
R22 · R32
2.2T – 3.5T · Cab-class
Serious dig depth, cabbed comfort, dozer blade and hydraulic quick-hitch. Tilt-rotator-ready hydraulics for full-time site crews and utility contractors.
Not sure? Send us the job spec — access width, dig depth and duty — and we'll recommend the smallest machine that can do it properly.

What is the difference between a micro digger and a mini digger?+
In the UK, a micro digger usually means a machine under about 1 tonne — narrow enough to pass through a standard side gate, often with retractable tracks. A mini digger generally covers roughly 1 to 3.5 tonnes, offering more dig depth, reach and lifting capacity while still towing on a plant trailer. "Mini excavator" and "mini digger" describe the same type of machine.
Can I legally tow a 1.5-tonne mini excavator on a standard UK trailer?+
Usually yes. A 1,500 kg machine on a plant trailer with a tare weight of roughly 700-800 kg gives a towed weight of about 2,300 kg. That sits inside a 3.5-tonne braked plant trailer and inside a standard UK car-and-trailer entitlement, provided your towing vehicle's plated limits allow it. Always check the trailer plate and your licence category.
Which engines are fitted to Ashmoors mini excavators?+
Most of the range runs Kubota diesel engines, including the R06 and R10 (Kubota Z482) and the larger cab-class machines. A small number of models use a different engine, so the exact unit is listed under Engine in the specification table on every machine page.
Will a mini excavator fit through a standard garden gate?+
The R06 is the access machine: 747 mm transport width with the undercarriage retracted, which clears a standard side gate and most alleyways. Tracks then expand hydraulically on site for stability. For anything wider than a gate, the 1.0-1.3 tonne class is the next step up.
What digging depth do I get in each weight class?+
Depth rises with weight: around 1,001 mm on the 0.74-tonne R06, roughly 1,833 mm on the 1.1-tonne R10, and over 2 metres on the 2.2-3.5 tonne cab-class machines. Exact figures for every model are published under Max digging depth on its own page.
What warranty and UK parts support comes with the machine?+
Machines come with a 12-month parts warranty, and Ashmoors handles the UK side throughout ownership: warranty claims, servicing, parts and technical support. The engine also carries the engine manufacturer's own warranty. Extended cover can be quoted on request. Send us the model and serial number and we confirm part compatibility and availability before you order.
What is the difference between zero tail swing and conventional tail swing?+
On a zero or low tail swing machine the counterweight stays inside the track width as the machine slews, so you can work flush against a wall or fence without repositioning. A conventional tail overhangs the tracks, which gives more counterweight and lifting stability but needs clear space behind.
